A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) combines an electric motor with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and can be charged from an external power source. PHEVs offer a balance between electric driving and the extended range provided by gasoline. They can operate on electricity alone for short distances, usually 20-40 miles, before the ICE kicks in to extend the range. PHEVs are seen as a transitional technology, offering the benefits of electric driving without the range anxiety associated with pure electric vehicles.
