Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries were once commonly used in early hybrid vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius. While more durable and less prone to overheating than lithium-ion batteries, NiMH batteries have lower energy density, which means they store less energy relative to their size and weight. As a result, most modern EVs have transitioned to lithium-ion batteries, which offer better performance and range. However, NiMH batteries are still used in some hybrid vehicles and for specific industrial applications.
