HEVs, or Hybrid Electric Vehicles, combine an internal combustion engine (ICE) with one or more electric motors. Unlike plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), HEVs cannot be charged from an external power source; instead, they rely on regenerative braking and the ICE to charge the onboard battery. HEVs use electric power for low-speed driving and assist the ICE during acceleration, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Examples include the Toyota Prius, which has popularized hybrid technology worldwide.
