India is leading an electric revolution but will the roads cope with EVs? Even if EVs promise cleaner air and reduced energy consumption, they will quickly become a safety concern. Do we feel ready to face these challenges head on or are we speeding into a pothole?

The Electric Boom in India

The EV market in India is on a tear. Numbers registered rose 16% compared to 2023 during the first half of 2024. Now with more than 16,344 public charging points and 10,756 fast-charging points, the network continues to grow — but is it enough? Initiatives such as the FAME India programme are speeding up EV adoption, but safety and infrastructure shortages are unsolvable.

The Burning Issue – Battery Safety

Battery fire is the biggest threat to EV safety. Instead, in EV fires, fires originate from thermal runaway and explode in an explosion with toxic gases. Battery safety is also a topic of concern in recent incidents.

To that, solutions such as Bharati Fire Engineers’ FireFite Lithex have emerged offering lithium battery fire solutions. With aqueous vermiculite dispersion (AVD), the technology fights fire where other means can’t. Tested by agencies such as DRDO and Tata Motors, FireFite Lithex redefines EV safety.

Infrastructure – The Missing Link

India’s EV network is getting stronger but still needs fillers. The research from TERI also stresses the need for strong infrastructure – charging stations, safety regulations, and technology updates. These will cause the EV boom to become stuck.

Challenges on the Road Ahead

  • BMS: Be sure EVs have advanced BMS to avoid overheating and thermal runaways.
  • Charging Stations: Inflating the number of fast-charging stations and adding smart grids are needed to keep pace with the increasing number of EV users.
  • Safety rules and standards: The safety rules and testing can reduce hazards.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Awareness of EV use and maintenance can help to reduce accidents and misuse.

Solutions Driving Safety Forward

Both carmakers and policymakers are designing safer EVs and charging infrastructure. Advancing batteries, better thermal management and firefighting devices such as FireFite Lithex are the first steps. As a bonus, further investments in infrastructure and safety measures can help India prepare for this change.

The Way To Come: Electric and Secure?

India’s EV journey is only beginning. If the prospect of a future that is sustainable and green is motivating, it’s not optional to address safety issues. With new technology and focused efforts, India can make roads for EV safer. Then what will happen if India’s infrastructure grows in time to catch up with the electric explosion? The answer is in how we approach safety today to guarantee a cleaner tomorrow.
