Now, as we’ve stepped into 2025, it’s the perfect time to look back and recap the transformative year of 2024 for the Indian car industry.

This was the year of electric mobility – as Indian car buyers, policymakers and automobile manufacturers dived into sleeker, quieter and cleaner electric cars. From compact city cars to expensive sedans, 2024 saw EVs for every budget.

As charging infrastructure exploded on city streets and major highways, the enthusiasm for EVs was increased, supported by governments and industry collaborations.

In this comprehensive review, we sift through the most popular EVs launched in India during this year of change.

Here’s your ultimate guide to 2024’s EV standouts and how they’ve paved the way for a cleaner and more sustainable mobility future in 2025 and beyond.

A Year Defined by Expansion and Ambition

In 2024, the EV market experienced an exponential growth of 26.5%, reaching 1.94 million units in demand. This impressive leap was driven by supportive government policies, including incentives and taxation reforms, and the determination of automakers both domestic and international to cater to India’s appetite for safer, smarter and cleaner mobility.

The charging infrastructure, once a significant barrier to EV adoption, underwent rapid transformation. Private firms and public agencies collaborated to establish a nationwide network of fast-charging stations. In metro cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, EV lanes in parking lots and quick-stop chargers in malls and apartments became increasingly common. Even Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities saw expanded charging options, addressing range anxiety for potential buyers.

These advancements paid off handsomely: EV sales surged by 70% compared to the previous year, with four-wheel electric vehicles claiming a growing share of the market. Affordable pricing also played a key role, as EVs became more accessible to the average Indian driver, with economical models complementing the high-end luxury options.

As we look back, let’s dive into the standout electric vehicles of 2024, exploring the diverse range that hit Indian roads—from premium sedans to compact urban SUVs—showcasing the industry’s remarkable strides toward a sustainable future.

  • Range (ARAI): 421 km (long-range), 315 km (standard)

One of India’s early pioneers of EV revolution, Tata Motors, kicked things off in January with the Punch EV. Turning its best-selling petrol compact SUV into an electric version made sense. Small, stylish and practical, the Punch EV quickly gained popularity with commuters and young professionals who wanted a budget-friendly, high-tech EV.

Punch EV comes in two different flavors to meet different user profiles. The extended variant features a 35 kWh battery that will make the car reach a respectable 421 km on a full charge (ARAI). The more basic 25 kWh version is a more affordable entry-level option for those whose daily commute falls within shorter distances. In the long run, the Punch EV’s perfect combination of affordability, performance and range became a crucial catalyst in Tata’s transformation to an electric superbrand.

It accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds, an incredible accomplishment for a car named after bespoke luxury.

Providing support for all these performance credentials is a giant 102 kWh battery, which is WLTP-rated for 530 km. Though unsustainably expensive, the Spectre appealed to the ultra-rich who wanted to see the marriage of Rolls-Royce history and EV technology.

The flagship Macan Turbo, for example, is all beasts: 630 bhp and 1,130 Nm of torque, which puts it from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.3 seconds.

It takes Mahindra’s out-there styling a step further, with a grille that’s uniquely Mahindra (if sealed, it’s an EV) and rugged body cladding betraying a rugged character.

The 59 kWh version claims 542 km on one charge, and the 79 kWh version pushes this up to 656 km (ARAI-certified). Both versions run on a single motor to drive the front wheels. 2024’s EV Boom and the Road Ahead

Electric Cars Launched in India
Credits: backiee.com

Between January and December 2024, the Indian EV market had changed at a rate few people could have imagined only a couple of years back. Though once an emerging market with limited mainstream acceptance, EVs are now firmly established — thanks to growing infrastructure, good government policies, and a proliferation of products on a mass scale. Electric cars are like they’ve never been offered at such diverse prices to buyers.

Whether you’re eyeing an entry-level MG Windsor with a removable battery package or dreaming of the silent elegance of the Rolls-Royce Spectre, the country has it all.

Domestic giants Tata Motors and Mahindra kept up their competition against international luxury brands by providing new, affordable, and stylish products that would fit in with Indian sensibilities. By sticking to SUVs and sedans that combine good volume with sophisticated tech, BYD went even further into the Indian mind.

Meanwhile, the elite segment of the luxury market had plenty to offer with Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz launching numerous cars for the performance enthusiasts and car fans.

Looking Forward

We will remember 2024 as a year where electric transportation moved from the experimental fringe to the mainstream. For customers who’re looking to buy their next vehicle, an EV is no longer a mere green buzzword — it’s a very competitive product that can be as good as or better than old-fashioned internal combustion engines in performance, convenience, and affordability.

Now as we’ve approached 2025, it is not yet the question of whether or when EVs will take over the roads of India. These models set a new standard in themselves, demonstrating that electric vehicles could fit all scenarios from the day-to-day commuter’s tight cash straps to the country’s high-class lifestyle.

That, in turn, paves the way for a further electrifying future and there’s no doubt only so much infrastructure can grow as demand rises.
